The Muskoka Watershed Council is a volunteer organization supported by the District and the Muskoka community. They believe that the most effective way to sustain the watersheds for future generations is through grass-roots cooperative approaches to watershed management involving a broad cross-section of stakeholders.

Flood Plain Mapping:

After significant flooding in the Muskoka River Watershed in 2013 and 2016, the District Municipality of Muskoka sought Federal funds through the National Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP) to conduct flood plain mapping. The District was successful in securing funds and initiated its Flood Plain Mapping project (FPMP) in 2018.

Through this work, the District seeks to update information about Muskoka’s local waterways, particularly with regard to Muskoka’s most vulnerable flood plains, in order to assist in the development of appropriate communication and mitigation strategies for areas most affected by recent and potential future flood events. This mapping is not proposed to cover the full extent of every watercourse in the district, but rather focuses on the largest lake chains and some of the developed areas.
